On October 11th at the Autism Alberta’s Alliance event in Edmonton, Dr. Neil Roberts and Autism Society Alberta launched the Barbara Stewart Self-Advocates Fund. In memory of the invaluable contribution Barbara made to the provincial autism community, this fund is dedicated to advancing charitable activities in support of self-advocates province-wide.
This special fund honours the legacy of an amazing autism champion. Throughout her life, Barbara Stewart was passionately committed to improving the lives of people with disabilities, especially those with autism. She worked with determination and incredible persistence to enhance education and services for autistic children and adults. Barbara was on a number of task forces, and was particularly passionate about one that focused on the needs of adults with autism that eventually led to the Protection of Persons in Care Act.
Barbara gained a reputation for being very well-informed; she was known to have keen intelligence and wisdom. Those who knew her appreciated her warmth and her encouraging spirit. She was someone blessed with grace and true kindness.
Barbara was instrumental in re-establishing and reviving Autism Society Alberta in the early 1990s. She knew how critical a provincial voice is for autistic children and adults. Although Barbara passed away in 2009, her spirit continues to move others to create opportunities for those with autism throughout the province.
Dr. Neil Roberts, who was married to Barbara until her untimely passing, remembers the effect she had on those around her:
“When I think of Barbara, I think not only of what she did, but how she did it – with style, flair and a generosity of spirit that inspired others to get involved.”
Barbara had a special place in her heart for self-advocates. Autism Society Alberta, along with Dr. Neil Roberts, invites you to contribute to the Barbara Stewart Self-Advocates Fund this Giving Tuesday, December 3, and throughout the year.
