Who Will Take Care of our Kids: A Conversation

A Panel Discussion on Future Planning for Autistic Adults with Complex Needs

Recorded October 9, 2026

Join Autism Alberta and an expert panel of parent-advocates, community leaders, and housing specialists for a vital discussion on future planning for autistic adults and individuals with complex needs. Inspired by the vision of the late Dr. Deborah Barrett, this presentation explores practical strategies, legal considerations, housing options, and community building to ensure long-term care, dignity, and peace of mind for families across Alberta.

In this video, panelists discuss:

  • Building a Support “Village”: Alternatives to microboards, circles of support, and natural networks.
  • Housing & Living Arrangements: Exploring supportive independent living, group homes, and Family Managed Supports (FMS).
  • Promoting Autonomy & Choice: Supporting self-determination and honoring individual communication styles.
  • Addressing “What-Ifs”: Safeguarding care continuity, legal planning (guardianship/trusteeship), and creating living guidance plans.

Panelists:

  • Kitty Parlby: Parent-advocate, consultant (Autism Inspirations), and former Autism Alberta board member
  • Krista Davidson Flint: CEO of Accessible Housing in Calgary
  • Lawrence Gregg: Complex Case Consultant with Autism Calgary & parent
  • Dawn Leonard: Executive Director of Plan Calgary
  • Carolyn Dudley: RN, project manager, author of the original Who Will Take Care of Our Kids paper, and parent
